Pride in work, loyalty to colleagues top reasons nurses stay
Organizational culture, including a commitment to excellence, makes health care workers stay, according to Press Ganey researchers. The authors, writing in Harvard Business Review, maintain health care organizations must focus culture “on the noble cause of reducing patients’ suffering and then supporting caregivers in that work.” After analyzing the drivers of loyalty for 410,000 health care employees during the pandemic, they found leadership matters ─ both in the C-suite and at the front lines where managers determine how organizational culture feels for employees. “Leaders must be clear about their values, their commitment to safety, the reduction of suffering and a culture of respect and inclusion,” the authors note. Press Ganey focuses on measuring and improving the experience of patients, employees and health plan members. (Harvard Business Review article, 3/2/23)
