Phoenix Children’s uses seasoned nurses to prevent errors
Phoenix Children’s last year implemented a program placing experienced nurse leaders in supervisory consulting roles to identify and address patient safety issues as soon as possible. The Clinical Nurse Attending program has resulted in zero preventable codes outside of the intensive care unit. The 12 clinical nurse attendants who work across all major hospital departments do not have an assigned caseload and work autonomously from the clinical staff. They provide clinical insight over every patient case on their unit to support bedside nurses and physicians. They also provide mentorship to newer nurses. (HealthLeaders Media article, 3/9/23)
