PCORI funds research on telehealth to manage chronic care
The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute awarded more than $27 million for three projects comparing the use of telehealth in care management with traditional methods. A University of Alabama at Birmingham researcher is studying how remote patient monitoring and digital health coaching could improve care management for people with Type 2 diabetes who have multiple chronic conditions and physical disabilities. Researchers at the University of California, Davis, are comparing outcomes for patients who start buprenorphine treatment in the emergency department and transition to a telehealth outpatient program compared with individuals who receive treatment in person. Johns Hopkins researchers in Baltimore are studying the effectiveness of a tele-rehabilitation program for people with chronic low back pain compared with in-clinic treatment.
