One-on-one meetings reduce new nurse turnover

To decrease nurse turnover at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis, AONL member Brigitte Nastally, MSN, RN, schedules regular and frequent one-on-one meetings with first-year nurses. The clinical operations manager says the meetings help build meaningful and supportive relationships while counteracting factors, such as inadequate preparation, environmental stressors and professional frustrations, which can contribute to increased turnover. According to various studies, newly licensed RN turnover rates range between 17% and 30% during the first year of employment and 30% to 57% in the second year.
