Nurses can take steps to recognize human trafficking
Less than 1% of nurses reported full confidence in being able to identify red flags and symptoms of human trafficking, yet up to 88% of victims come into contact with the health care system while being trafficked, according to studies. Many victims consider their traffickers their boyfriends and do not self-identify as victims. Nurses can identify trafficking victims by noticing signs and symptoms, including signs of physical abuse, cases of substance use and tattoo designs for branding victims. Also at higher risk for trafficking are patients with frequent urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections or diseases and ectopic pregnancies; those who survived a suicide attempt; or anyone who is with a companion who does all the speaking for them.
