Nurse mentors wanted to cultivate diverse workforce
The AARP Center for Health Equity through Nursing seeks nurses ─ working or retired ─ to mentor nursing students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-serving institutions and American Indian/Alaska Native schools. AARP will pair eligible volunteers with a participating school in their region. Mentors will participate in trainings and quarterly learning collaborations. Mentoring is a proven strategy for increasing retention and professional success. Currently, about half of all Black and Latino students entering four-year colleges do not complete their degrees, contributing to a health care workforce that does not reflect the U.S. population and to persistent health disparities. Nurses who are interested in applying to be a mentor can find more information at the AARP volunteer portal for the Nurse Mentoring Program. (Campaign for Action article, 4/11/23)
