Nurse leaders discuss how to demonstrate nursing’s value
Nurse leaders should convey to CEOs the value nurses bring to care to avoid being viewed as an expense, say AONL members Katie Boston-Leary, PhD, RN, and Rudy Jackson, DNP, RN. Jackson, senior vice president and CNE at UW Health in Madison, Wis., says health systems should offer appropriate staffing ratios based on nursing’s assessment of the care needed and leverage technology to support administrative tasks nurses perform. Boston-Leary, director of nursing programs at the American Nurses Association, says nurse-sensitive measures can enable hospitals to see a return on investment when hiring nurses. She says CNOs should advocate for finance departments to show how nurses contribute to the bottom line. (HealthLeaders Media article, 7/29/24)
