Nurse leader offers advice to aspiring CNOs

AONL member Gay Landstrom, PhD, RN, urges aspiring CNOs to experience other areas of clinical care besides acute care, including home health care, palliative care and senior care to gain broad knowledge and insight on how to make improvements in health care. Landstrom, who serves as senior vice president and CNO at Trinity Health in Livonia, Mich., says CNOs must understand an organization’s financial elements, including challenges with reimbursement, billing and revenue cycles. They should be able to translate information about clinical matters to non-clinical C-suite executives to ensure a health system’s strategies and operations prioritize patient care.
