Nurse leader burnout reduced by spending time with patients, nurses
AONL member Allison Guste, MSN, RN, believes nurse leaders can reduce burnout by spending time on the floor with patients and observing front-line nurses provide care. Guste, CNO at University Medical Center and corporate vice president, nursing and clinical services, at LCMC Health in New Orleans, says hearing patient stories reminds her that she became a nurse leader to inspire collaboration and care transformation. While front-line nurse burnout has received widespread attention, nurse leader burnout is just starting to be discussed in mainstream media. An AMN Healthcare report released in February found 31% of hospital nurse leaders plan to leave their jobs in the next year. (HealthLeaders Media article, 3/4/24)
