Nurse creates bleeding control course for children

Kate Carleton, RN, started a school-based program to teach children how to stop bleeding if they encounter an emergency or are at school when a shooting occurs. She and her colleagues from Sutter Roseville (Calif.) Medical Center have taught a bleeding control course to more than 10,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Carleton modified the course offered by the American College of Surgeons, Stop the Bleed, which shows bystanders how to treat hemorrhages. Elementary students learn how to pack a wound and apply direct pressure, while middle and high school students learn how to manage a tourniquet and give hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
