Modules explain how to provide care to LGBTQIA+ patients
An interactive learning module and resource toolbox enables nurses to provide best practices in LGBTQIA+ health care. The resources are available with and without continuing education credit. Developed by the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, the modules teach providers how to approach patients in a welcoming and inclusive manner. The researchers held focus groups with faculty, students, LGBTQIA+ individuals and health care providers who care for this population to develop the content. Less than 20% of nursing students receive preparation for providing care to LGBTQIA+ patients, even though one in four LGBTQIA+ patients surveyed said they experienced a negative reaction from their health care provider after they disclosed their sexual orientation or gender identity.
