Mercy CNO discusses AI
AONL member Betty Jo Rocchio, DNP, RN, says CNOs should ensure artificial intelligence makes the delivery of care more efficient and effective, rather than disrupts nurses. Rocchio, the senior vice president and CNE at Cape Girardeau, Mo.-based Mercy, is piloting AI for patient handoffs from the emergency department to inpatient units. Mercy also launched a workforce platform to enable teams to get the right clinician to the right spot without a nurse intervening. AI calculates the number of necessary shifts and sets the rate on incentives for nurses who want extra shifts. Mercy started innovation units permitting front-line staff to weigh in on whether AI is helping to improve workflow. (HealthLeaders Media article, 2/26/24)
