Journalist Quiñones shares stories of compassionate caring
Emmy-winning reporter John Quiñones talked to attendees at AONL 2024 about the motivations behind his TV show “What Would You Do?” Quiñones, who is known for his compelling storytelling and thought-provoking social experiments, grew up in poverty and toiled as a migrant farmworker. He didn’t learn English until the first grade. “I created ‘What Would You Do?’ because I wanted to hold up a mirror to American society,” Quiñones said. “We wanted to know, how do you unlock the power and the light that exists in each and every one of us so that we're all better equipped to say, ‘Hey, that's wrong?,’ or ‘How can I help?’” Quiñones suggested that this may be familiar territory for nurse leaders, who dedicate their careers to caring and advocating for others. As the country becomes increasingly polarized, such empathy and courage is in high demand. “I think we have to raise our voices today louder than ever.”
