Joint Commission explains move to fewer requirements
Jonathan Perlin, PhD, MD, Joint Commission president and CEO, discussed his decision to enact fewer, more meaningful requirements for hospitals. In an American Hospital Association blog, Perlin said his staff reviewed each standard to ensure it addressed an important safety and quality issue, was not redundant and had evolved with contemporary practice. Staff also checked that the time and resources needed to comply with the requirement were commensurate with the benefit to patient care and health outcomes. The organization also conducted a quantitative review, literature and field review and spoke with experts. Perlin wants the review to “help provide some relief to hospitals, health systems and their providers as they continue to recover from the pandemic.” (AHA blog, 1/11/23)
