Interprofessional engagement improved new nurses’ safety skills

A virtual simulation with an interprofessional debriefing encouraged nurse and medical residents at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. to collaborate and discuss safety topics away from the stress of the bedside, a study found. The hospital established the activity after residents who were students during the pandemic expressed a lack of confidence in communicating with interprofessional team members. Twenty-six medical residents and 64 nurse residents reviewed a scenario of a safety event resulting in a patient’s death, followed with a structured debriefing allowing participants to reflect on safety techniques that could have saved the patient’s life. Results were published in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Journal of Patient Safety. (AHRQ Journal of Patient Safety article, 11/6/24)
