Hospitals should implement caring model

Hospitals should reconnect nurses to their original calling of providing compassionate care to patients to reduce burnout, write AONL members and Press Ganey employees Nora Warshawsky, PhD, RN, a nurse scientist, and Mary Jo Assi, DNP, RN, associate CNO. In the American Journal of Nursing’s June issue, they recommend a model emphasizing caring for the caregiver and caring for the patient. They say hospitals should emphasize how nurses can enhance the patient experience by establishing a human connection and trust with patients because patients want to be in a caring environment, and nurses want to work in one. Hospitals can further engage nurses by enhancing the connection among teams and between team members, which will positively affect quality, safety, clinical and patient experience outcomes.
