Hospital embraces flexible staffing, autonomous scheduling
Bon Secours Hampton Roads (Va.) relies on flexible staffing with autonomous scheduling and float shifts to retain nurses and decrease reliance on agency nurses. It offers an internal travel program with float schedules. Nurses can choose to float between units at a single facility, hospitals within the market, or travel between any of the system’s 49 hospitals. Nurses can alter their schedules without a manger’s involvement. In addition, the hospital supports novice nurses through their first year on the job after their nurse residency program ends. They meet with leadership to discuss their needs and struggles, and they receive additional training in those areas. (Becker’s Hospital Review article, 6/13/24)
