Health system nursing exec discusses practice redesign
Nursing shortages, increased patient acuity and pipeline challenges are causing nurse executives to design different care models, according to Jason Gilbert, PhD, RN, executive vice president and chief nurse executive at Indiana University Health, Indianapolis. As it conducts practice redesign, the system engages front-line staff and family members of patients, encourages autonomy, rapid testing and frequent evaluation. Gilbert, an AONL member, said the system is continually looking to improve through pilots, rather than implementing one care model throughout the system and considering care redesign complete. Indiana University Health also has given grant money to Ivy Tech Community College and the Indiana University School of Nursing to expand enrollment. In addition, it seeks partners with high school and vocational schools to encourage students to enter the health care fields. (HealthLeaders Media article, 3/5/23)
