HRSA predicts nursing shortage through 2037
In 2027, the national nursing shortage will be 10%, with the shortage continuing through 2037, according to the Health Research and Services Administration’s latest projections for the national supply, demand and distribution of health care workers. HRSA projects non-metro areas to have a greater shortage of RNs than metro areas in 2027 (24% versus 7%). The projected supply of licensed practice and vocational nurses is sufficient to meet 80% of the demand in 2027 but only 64% of the demand in 2037. While HRSA projects the supply of nurse practitioners to exceed demand at the national level, the distribution of NPs could affect availability.
