HHS study to leverage nursing’s knowledge to improve AI
The Department of Health and Human Services this week awarded a grant to the trustees of Columbia University, New York City, for a study seeking to harness nursing’s knowledge to capture systematically the nuances of nursing data to improve artificial intelligence. By better understanding nursing practice, decision-making and workflows, the researchers want to develop more comprehensive, accurate and transparent algorithms. The authors also want to develop scalable computational approaches to evaluate and improve the data quality recorded by inpatient nurses and used in AI algorithms. The project will end in 2026. The study is one of two awarded through HHS’ Leading Edge Acceleration Projects in Health Information Technology. (HHS news release, 9/17/24)
