HANYS report identifies COVID-19 lessons
A report released last week by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) used multiple performance improvement methodologies to identify lessons learned in New York’s hospitals during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed by HANYS Statewide Steering Committee on Quality Initiatives, the group conducted a root cause analysis to identify underlying system and process causes and contributing factors that resulted in an overwhelmed health care delivery system. The report noted one successful strategy was redeploying nurses and ancillary staff to provide cross training and refresher training based on their prior experience. This report is intended to help health care systems prepare for future pandemics. (Joint Commission news release, 7/6/22)
