Four-day week for nurse managers can improve work-life balance
A four-day workweek for nurse managers at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City appears to improve morale. The program, begun in 2022, permits nurse managers to work longer shifts over fewer days to improve work-life balance. An interim program evaluation not yet published found 92% of nurse managers said the schedule supported work-life balance, and 100% said the schedule aligned with Mount Sinai’s organizational value of “care of self and care of colleagues.” Nurse managers also stated the program has positively affected staff nurse retention, patient experience and patient safety metrics such as more discharges before noon, a shorter length of stay and fewer health care-associated adverse events.
