FDA Extends Expiration Dates for Some IV Fluids
Baxter International, Deerfield, Ill. is extending the use date of some IV fluid products following approval from the Food and Drug Administration. After reviewing stability data submitted by Baxter, the FDA is permitting certain products to have a 24-month expiration from the manufacture date without relabeling them. Baxter made available a full list of product codes, lot/serial numbers, labeled expiration dates and extended expiration dates. The extended expiration dates apply only to product codes manufactured before Sept. 30. A replay of the Oct. 28 Department of Health and Human Services briefing on IV solutions conservation amid the disruption at Baxter's North Carolina plant is now available. In addition, an AHA podcast discusses the Cleveland Clinic’s IV-fluid conservation strategies and the importance of constant and targeted communication during supply chain shortages.
