Emory Healthcare describes metrics for virtual nursing

Emory Healthcare uses metrics to measure the success of virtual nursing, according to Vice President and Chief Clinical Informatics Officer Jason Atkins, MBI, RN. The Atlanta-based system measures nurse satisfaction and nurse engagement through nurse surveys. It also measures patient satisfaction to see if clinicians are explaining how virtual nursing works to build patients’ trust and engagement. The system uses virtual nurses to complete discharge planning, education and facilitation. Virtual nurses also are the point-people for interdisciplinary rounding. Emory measures readmission rates, which often are dependent on discharges, education and follow-up planning. In addition, Emory measures length of stay, cost and productivity to see if it is offloading the burden of care from front-line nurses and realizing overall cost savings.
