Editorial describes how to recruit, retain Latino nurses
Health organizations should develop a strategy for recruiting and retaining Latino nurses, who are underrepresented in the nursing workforce, states an editorial published in the American Journal of Nursing’s December issue. Hospitals should ensure Latino nurses feel valued and are considered for leadership opportunities. Employers can take advantage of tuition reimbursement, partnerships with local nursing schools and mentoring Latino health care workers to aid them in becoming nurses. In addition, hiring managers can include Latino nurses in leadership opportunities, such as leading unit-based shared governance and serving on committees. Leaders can welcome local chapters of organizations supporting underrepresented nurses and enable nurses to attend ethnic minority nursing conferences.
