Coaching program supports nurse retention
Yale New Haven (Conn.) Health System is increasing retention of newly graduated nurses by making experienced nurses available to coach them 24 hours a day. The hospital’s clinical nurse transition program is an offshoot of its preceptor program. Coaches are chosen for their exceptional interpersonal, listening and communications skills. They coach roughly 10 nurses at a time and are available evenings and weekends, when organizations are more vulnerable. Just-in-time coaching provides a safety net for novice RNs while helping them develop their problem-solving skills. Three-quarters of the participants say the program boosts their confidence, reduces their stress and enhances patient safety. (HealthLeaders Media article, 6/7/21)
