Career development, violence prevention hot topics at AONL 2024
Nurse leaders emphasized career development at AONL 2024 in New Orleans last week. Mary Beth Kingston, PhD, RN, CNO at Charlotte, N.C.-based Advocate Health, encouraged nurses who are interested in leadership to engage in professional organizations, take calculated career risks and recognize they have transferable skills, Kingston also spoke about said taking a patient-centered approach to workplace violence, which might reduce incidents. She suggested health systems should determine why incidents occur by meeting patients where they are and trying to understand what is happening in their lives to make them lash out. Kingston said de-escalation training would aid nurses in speaking to patients, families and visitors in stressful situations. (HealthLeaders Media article, 4/15/24)
