CNO Sievert discusses healthy work environments
Healthy work environments exist when nurses practice to the top of their license and have their input respected and listened to throughout the organization, according to AONL member Deana Sievert, DNP, RN. The CNO at Ohio State Wexner University and Ross Heart Hospital in Columbus, Ohio says shared governance is critical to healthy work environments, along with team engagement and clear pathways for nurses to report concerns and solve problems. She also notes the importance of incorporating self-care into the work environment and for leadership to address workplace violence. Sievert says CNOs need to be the voice for nurses at leadership tables, communicating their concerns and needs. They also need to provide feedback from board meetings to front-line nurses.
