CNO Jacobs shares workforce insights
Health care facilities need to create environments that enable front-line nurses to leave work “feeling like they have made a difference to their patients, families and colleagues,” said former Luminis Health Anne Arundal Medical Center Vice President of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Barbara Jacobs, MSN, RN. An AONL member who recently retired at the Annapolis, Md., facility, Jacobs added, “If we do not create these environments, we will continue to see nurses leave the bedside.” With the baby-boomer generation of nurses retiring, Jacobs said leaders must provide strong nurse residencies and clinical resources for the less-experienced staff replacing them. As health care institutions work to achieve efficiencies to combat financial concerns, leaders should avoid saddling nursing teams with non-nursing activities, she added.
