CDC recommends RSV vaccine for pregnant people
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week recommended pregnant individuals receive one dose of the respiratory syncytial virus vaccine between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy to protect their newborn from severe RSV. In a study, the Pfizer vaccine (Abrysvo) reduced the risk of RSV hospitalization for babies by 57% in the first six months after birth. RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization for U.S. infants. The vaccine received approval last August. It is available in some locations and should become more available in the coming weeks, the CDC said. (CDC news release, 9/22/23)
