Article calls for change in measuring nursing care in hospitals
An article in the November-December issue of Nursing Outlook calls on stakeholders to make the impact of nurses’ work clearly visible to improve patient outcomes and create a more rewarding profession for nurses. Martha A.Q. Curley, PhD, RN, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, and colleagues outline nine core areas where nurses provide essential care. The areas include patient education, advocacy and emotional support in addition to clinical expertise. They call for measuring positive outcomes directly linked to nursing interventions. They want nurse leaders to use data and analytics to focus on patient outcomes derived from the full spectrum of nursing care and for hospitals to implement information systems capturing data encompassing the full spectrum of nursing care.
