AACN supports family presence during invasive procedures
The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses recently issued a practice alert reinforcing that hospitals should return to offering families the opportunity to be present during resuscitation and invasive procedures. Although once common, many hospitals restricted visitation during the COVID-19 pandemic, and some hospitals have continued to limit access to progressive and critical care units, despite the public health emergency ending in 2023. The alert summarizes expected nursing practice before, during and after an event. In addition, it covers organizational support, such as actions from unit leadership, policies, training and establishing designated family presence facilitators. (Newswise news release, 5/7/24)
