EHR intervention eases clinician burnout
The challenge of working with electronic health records (EHRs) is a known risk factor for clinician burnout. To address this concern, the Mayo Clinic introduced the “Sprint” intervention in six of its clinics in an effort to make their EHRs more efficient and user-friendly. Sprint teams included EHR trainers, EHR analysts and physician and nurse informaticists. They worked intensively with clinicians over the course of two weeks to improve individuals’ facility with the technology, revise workflow designs and develop new specialty-specific tools such as reports, flow sheets and questionnaires. Mayo invested $1.7 million (including lost clinician productivity) on the intervention and saw a rise in clinician satisfaction with the EHR. (HealthLeaders story, 5/29/19)
