The Next Nurse You Hire May Never Touch Your Patients
DATE: Dec. 6, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. CT
Health care organizations are under tremendous pressure as the need for nurses outpaces a shrinking workforce and pipeline. Creating innovative models of care that leverage technology is one method to bridge the workforce gap. Virtual nursing operationalizes technology, supports clinical decision-making processes, continuity of care, and patient safety and provides a work environment conducive for keeping technically competent and highly educated nurses engaged at the bedside (Cloyd, 2020).
Indiana University Health, the largest health system in Indiana, performed a rapid test of change and then scaled a novel virtual nursing program across its enterprise in record time, leading to reduced workload for bedside nurses, and improved admission documentation quality and timeliness. However, the initial technology platform limited program agility and overall success. Learn how IU Health continues to innovate in this space, moving to virtual 2.0.
