Strengthen your communication strategies and engage your organization to amplify nurses’ expertise and voice in the media. This unique, new program is provided by AONL in collaboration with the George Washington University School of Nursing Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement.

Hear from expert faculty Barbara Glickstein and Diana J. Mason!

Through this program, nurse executives will develop an external communication strategy in conjunction with their health care organization to enhance the organization’s use of nurses as media sources. Taught by expert faculty Diana Mason and Barbara Glickstein, the lead researchers on the Woodhull Study Revisited, which investigated nurses’ representation in the health news media. 

In a community of practice, learn from the deep knowledge and experience of the faculty how to enhance nurse expert visibility in your organization. Through interactive sessions, share successes, gain a deeper understanding of the challenges of nurse representation in the media and develop an individual communication strategy. 

• Guidance on how to assess your organization’s readiness for revising its external communication strategy to include nurses
• Effective ways to enhance nurses’ visibility as experts in news media 
• Definitions for success in developing an effective communications strategy with examples
• Barriers to success in developing an effective communications strategy, including gag orders, online harassment, power hierarchies, and internal relationships

You’ll complete the program with a fully developed strategic media communication plan with your organization that incorporates nurses’ expertise. In addition, AONL may ask participants to provide media interviews as a subject matter expert, providing individual and organizational exposure in the media. 

The program is for nurse executives who are interested in knowing how to develop effective communication strategies to raise the voice of nursing in the media, enhance their organization’s presence in the media by including nurses, and to elevate the nursing profession through media sources. 

Participants will participate in one in-person workshop and six months of virtual coaching post-workshop to discuss progress and challenges in implementing the strategy.

Barbara Glickstein, RN, MPH, MS. FAAN is the Principal of Barbara Glickstein Strategies, a strategic communications company providing media training and media advocacy skills. She is a Strategist consultant to Carolyn Jones Productions.

Diana J. Mason, Ph.D., RN, FAAN is the Senior Policy Service Professor for the Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement at George Washington University School of Nursing. She is Professor Emerita and Co-Director of the Center for Health, Media, and Policy at Hunter College, City University of New York, where she was the inaugural Rudin Professor of Nursing until 2016.

CANCELLATION

A refund minus 20% will be granted to written requests received 14 days or more prior to the start date of the program. Cancellations must be submitted in writing via email to aonleducation@aha.org. No refunds will be granted after that date. No refunds will be granted for no-shows. Registrants unable to attend may send a substitute. If the substitute is not an AONL member, the nonmember differential must be paid in advance or onsite. All fees are transferable to the substitute less a $25 transfer fee.
