Nurses could benefit from initiatives to increase FPE use

Nurses in emergency departments could benefit from targeted initiatives to improve compliance with wearing facial protective equipment, according to a comprehensive review. Published this week in the American Journal of Infection Control, the study sought to determine factors resulting in FPE adherence. The authors found a strong safety culture, clear policies and guidance, and accessibility of FPE could increase FPE use. In addition, some of the studies identified opportunities for improved FPE design to improve compliance, including improved comfort and visual clarity. The researchers say health leaders should use multiple educational strategies to increase FPE use. The comprehensive review included 29 independent studies from 17 countries conducted between January 2005 and February 2022. (American Journal of Infection Control article, 4/22/24)
